Indoor Air Quality

As Americans spend more and more time indoors, both at work and at home, they are becoming increasingly concerned with the quality of the indoor environment. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the average American spends 90% of his or her time indoors. Several factors can affect the health and comfort of building occupants, the most important being indoor air quality.

In an industrial setting, workplace hazards and chemical contaminants are fairly obvious. Workers recognize that they work with chemicals and that there may be an exposure risk associated with their work. This is not so with the general building environment. Office and school buildings have traditionally been viewed as safe places to work. However, in recent years the presence of contaminants in the indoor air has become a real concern, posing a health risk greater than outdoor pollution. With increasing emphasis placed on energy efficiency and re-circulation of conditioned air, and the increased use of synthetic furnishings and building materials, the number and concentration of contaminants in indoor air have dramatically increased.
